I am in support of supplementing desalinated water with magnesium an I do believe magnesium addition will be beneficial for human health. Magnesium in desalinated water is usually quite low - typically less than 2 mg/L. WHO is considering recommendation to add at least 5 to 10 mg/L of magnesium to desalinated water as a supplement enhancing cardiovascular health. Besides human health, another important factor in favor of magnesium supplementation is that this is a critical compound for many agricultural crops and ornamental plants. The level of magnesium needed for desalinated water application for agricultural purposes is relatively high - 15 to 20 mg/L. In any case, addition of magnesium is not expected to increase water production by more than 5 US cents per cubic meter and is certainly worthwhile. Nikolay Voutchkov, Water Globe Consulting
