How effective is Reverse Osmosis filtration compared to other methods?
Reverse osmosis how does it function?
The best Reverse Osmosis is a very simple process which removes chemicals from water and makes water fresh and tasty.
To drink water, you need to remove harmful chemicals from water and removes inorganic solids as well as suspended solid, apply high pressure to flow a large amount of water through semi-membrane. The permeate is applied for useful post treatment. In figure one, the scheme of the diagram is shown. To pass high water pressure is applied and this dissolves the mixed chemicals.
And the pressure removes particles from water. To pass high water pressure is applied and this dissolves the mixed chemicals. And the pressure removes particles from water. For brackish water, the range of pressure is 17 to 27 bar, sea water, the pressure is from 52 to 69 bar.
For desalination, the RO system comes with two types. One is spiral wound, and the other is hollow fiber. This depends on the quality of permeate and the use of the permeate. PH is measured by the post-treatment of adjusting.

Thanks Nikolay for clearing my idea on ROF.

Hi Alisha: You are most welcome! Please check out the "Documents" folder - it has a fair amount of information on what desalination can do and how much it costs. Nikolay

In terms of being able to produce drinking water from any source - saline (ocean water) and contaminated or wastewater water - desalination by reverse osmosis is the most effective and cost efficent technology availalbe at present. It removes all pathogens and toxins from the source water and can process saline water from any water body on the planet. In terms of costs and energy - desalination is certianly costlier than water produciton from fresh sources (rivers, lakes, etc.) - water costs could be up to 5 times higher than these from a simple water well and energy could be up to 10 times higher.
