What might be a thought is to find out if specific resonant frequencies have the same effect on salt in a solute as it does on a flat surface.
If the sound waves were in direct opposition to the flow of water, then it is possible that it might have the same effect. If so...
The link is to a geometric pattern that salt forms at 345 Hz. If a metal plate went around the outside of a pipe and was some where near perpendicular to the pipe, it's possible that it might have the same effect on the salt in water. If so, then the pipe below the level of the pulse generator could be separated into sections that would keep higher concentration solute from desalinated water.
