One thing I should have mentioned about this is that a rise in the elevation of the land would create a pressure head. An example of this is going up a hill or mountain. When it comes down the other side, if the pipe is larger, then it could move water great distances. And if the drop in elevation is as an example 3,000 meters, it could both desalinate and move water.
