Antonie, do write in detail about the smart meters. Certainly it will increase the water efficiency and help in more production. I am interested in knowing the technology in details.

Smart meters already exist for domestic water. And could be adapted to irrigation. The goal of a smart meter is to find advantages for the water distributor and for the farmers. Water meters are a mean to charge water but should also be a mean for farmers to manage their consumption. For that the meter will send alarm to the farmer when the consumption is suspicious (to detect a leak or something else). The farmer can also follow his consumption instantly. For the water distributor, it can be very interesting to manage the resource and to check consumption of any consummers from a distance. But we can imagine a lot of function, it could be different for each country. And maybe you have thought to another function?
