E coli can be tested very easily using Colilert type technique. All you need is the purchased prepared containers, add the water and store at 37 C for about 24 hours or less. Yellow color indicates coliforms; fluorescence under a UV lamp indicates E coli. Cost about $5 per sample in bulk purchase. Can also quantify using an MPN approach with dilutions.
