What are the main contributing factor(s) to addressing ensuring equitable access to safe drinking water (e.g., technologies, access, distribution, awareness, education, etc.)?
1. Water supply handled by the profit-oriented private companies worsens the conditions!
2. Poverty, which again is the vicious circle of lack of awareness and lack of affordability!
3. Political biases, where water is made available in the areas near the houses of some political leaders or drinking water are supplied via water tanks!
One of the mindsets I find in talking to government and NGO leaders is that "its better than what they had" is substituted for safe, clean water meeting WHO guidelines. Resources are applied to partial solutions, like partial disinfection, essentially starving solutions that could actually provide SAFE water.
I do not think it is about technology. It is about awareness and education. It is about understanding that water is a finite resource and needs to be protected. It is the acceptance of the fact that access to water is a basic human right and the key to poverty alleviation and therefore, everybody should have equal access to it.
