Nature's all-encompassing role to supporting life should come as no surprise. It is humanity, in all its wisdom (sic), that prefers to abuse (at the expense of) that which supports life rather than co-exist within its evolutionary perfection. The greatest tragedy being the disruption of the global water cycle, which controls global climate, consequentially draining the land of water/nutrients critical to maintenance of ecosystems - forever replacing Nature's lifeblood with synthetic alternatives. Just a few marine outfalls operating in 1900 (nil ocean dead zone) from a global population of 1.6B to now some 1M marine outfalls (disposing of some 2,000 cubic kilometres annually) in 2021 (resulting in the death of some 20% of world ocean, is historically doubling by the decade) from 7.9B people. Human sewage treated or untreated is oxygen deficient, oxygen demanding and therefore acidifying. Yet, all that needs to happen is to cease marine disposal, and work with Nature to end marine pollution, and so return water/nutrients to the Land in the fight against climate change. Wake Up World!
