maarten waterloo, Senior ecohydrologist at Acacia Water

Summary

I have a background in earth sciences and switched to hydrology in the late 1980s. I did my PhD on water and nutrient dynamics of Pinus caribaea plantation forests in Fiji. I subsequently worked mainly in tropical environments (Sarawak, Cameroon, Amazonia) and on Kyoto Protocol CO2 issues before becoming an assistant professor at the VU University Amsterdam. I gave course in general hydrology, global change, catchment response analysis, ecohydrology, soil-vegetation-atmosphere exchange, python programming, hydrological modelling, hydrological field measurement techniques and hydrological field studies (Portugal). I supervised several PhD students working on ecohydrological studies in Slovenia and the Brazilian Amazon. Since 2015 I work at Acacia Water in Gouda, The Netherlands, where I am involved in agricultural studies nationally and internationally (water, nutrients, pesticides) with projects in The Netherlands, Ethiopia and  Burkina Faso. I am involved in international integrated water resource management training programmes for NUFFIC and am a member of the Dutch Disaster Reduction Team (DRR-Team) of the Dutch Government, having participated in missions in Niger and Tonga.
