Sysman's commitment to non-partisanship and fairness has him explore politics of recognition (the subaltern) and political traditions of thought. He does evidence-based advocacy research focusing on hydro-politics (water governance, service delivery), human rights, democratisation, community development, and environmentalism. He is experienced in research consulting and programme implementation in the NGO sector.
