Brown and Caldwell, a national environmental engineering firm, has an exciting opportunity for a senior-level engineer to set the strategic direction for the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants department in the Phoenix Office, manage and execute work on projects, help ensure successful client relationships, and pursue business development opportunities. This position will work closely with technical experts and other leaders in the Desert Area, Cal-Desert Region, and nationally across the company, and participate as a member of the Phoenix Leadership team. In this role, you will help manage and work on design and construction phases of infrastructure projects for municipal and private sector clients in our Phoenix, AZ office. You will provide civil/mechanical engineering support along with project management duties for a variety of projects which may include planning studies, evaluation, design and construction related activities for wastewater, water and storm water conveyance systems, pumping systems and related facilities.

Job Expectations:
In this role you will work with and be mentored by local and national senior technical staff. Our ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, be highly organized and capable of working in a diverse team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities. This position will also act as the Project Engineer or Project Manager on some projects. You will be working with technical staff and executing the following types of work:
This role is for an engineer with experience managing others and successfully delivering work involving water and wastewater treatment projects in the water and wastewater industry. This person will utilize consulting expertise to manage and execute work on projects and to help ensure successful client relationships, while developing new key clients in connection with planned targets. The W/WW Treatment Plants Leader will work closely with the Phoenix Local Leader, Desert Area Leader, other leaders and technical experts in the Phoenix office, Desert Area, and Company as a whole to help lead the development and execution of the Phoenix office business plan and meet company objectives including growth, profitability, and diversification targets. Primary responsibilities will include:
- Provide leadership of Phoenix Plants Practice, setting strategy and hiring needs to support Phoenix office business goals.
- Supervise, delegate, and oversee the work of technical staff and engineers
- Help mentor, and provide direction for less experienced staff
- Lead a group of professionals and recruit new talent
- Drive the BC culture throughout the department staff
- Coordinate with other team members in Phoenix and the Desert Area on strategic goals and initiatives and manage workload planning and staffing
- Manage a portfolio of projects for municipal and private industry clients
- Lead project teams and provide consultation services in such planning and/or design projects, make decisions and solve problems
- Successfully manage and deliver projects on time and on budget. Utilize internal project management and risk management tools and resources.
- Pursue and secure project work for the Phoenix Plants Department, assist with business development functions and pursuits, provide marketing and technical leadership during the procurement and execution of key projects
- Execute sales plan in collaboration with CSMs, Local Leader and Area Leader
- Provide leadership in obtaining and developing new key clients each year in connection with planned targets and with the assistance of other senior staff in the office and region
- Assist with and lead business development pursuits
- Provide continuous evaluation of projects, staff and clients to identify areas of risk and elevate them expeditiously for consideration to the Local Lead, Area Leader or other senior leadership staff as appropriate.
- Development of assigned staff through leadership, mentoring, training and delegation of activities.
- Staff oversight including acknowledgement of exceptional services and quickly addressing deficient work.
- Manage and execute work on wastewater and water utilities including treatment plants, pumping station and conveyance systems planning and design.
- Utilize internal project management tools and resources.
- Perform technical research and be able to communicate and apply this knowledge.
- Participate in improving company resources and tools to improve design production and efficiency.
- Prepare and make presentations to clients and for professional meetings
Desired Skills and Experience:
- B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and P.E. required.
- Candidate should have at least 15 years of increasingly-responsible, professional experience in the study, design, and construction administration of water and wastewater industry.
- Professional registered engineer in the State of Arizona or the credentials to obtain registration in a timely manner is also required.
- The candidate should have the ability to successfully manage clients and projects in a collaborative fashion and interface with Brown and Caldwell’s local, regional, and national water/wastewater practitioners as well as help mentor junior staff.
- Previous business development experience (writing winning proposals and successfully pursuing work) is a plus.
- Experience should include: conveyance system design, design of fluid dynamics and pumping systems, and ability to research equipment and technologies.
- Experience with different pipe materials, valves, gravity mains, force mains, water transmission and distribution mains
- Understanding of multi-discipline aspects of designs
- Demonstrated strong project management skills.
- Ability to focus on client needs while balancing multiple priorities including but not limited to project management, design, bidding and construction management services.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective presentations and prepare written reports and documents.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
