The City of Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant is looking to hire an  Assistant Manager  in Water Treatment Services to oversee water system operation, maintenance, and compliance associated with our award-winning drinking water.  This position will supervise operations and maintenance staff responsible for the water plant, reservoirs, pump stations, dams and hydroelectric generating stations that treat and deliver safe drinking water to more than 125,000 Ann Arbor utility customers.  In conjunction with the Plant Manager and the Drinking Water Quality Manager, the Assistant Manager will interact with a diverse customer base (watershed nonprofits, city service units, elected officials and Ann Arbor residents) to ensure that the drinking water being delivered meets established regulatory, safety, quality and fiscal standards. 

Specific duties relate to managing resources for the continuous operation and water quality compliance of the Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant (WTP).  These activities include, but are not limited to, guiding the operation of treatment equipment and processes, assisting in the identification and development of capital investments and maintenance projects, making recommendations on treatment modifications, leading the emergency response team, guiding the daily scheduling and assignment of operations work, supervising staff supervisors, preparing regulatory and non-regulatory required reports, developing agreements for and managing contract services, developing standard operating procedures and managing union related issues. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

A successful candidate will be proven leader looking to make an impact with a water treatment plant that has long been considered a leader in our field.  Growth opportunities for this position include potential promotion to Water Treatment Services Manager within the next 5-7 years based upon projected retirements and succession planning.     

A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Biology or Environmental Science and at least 5 years of progressively more responsible experience in drinking water treatment, drinking water or wastewater laboratory services, and/or civil or environmental engineering is required.  A Master’s degree in a scientific or engineering field is preferred.

Applicants must currently possess an MDEQ F-4 license (or obtain one within one-year of employment), an F-1 Operator in Charge license (or obtain one within five years of employment) and a valid Michigan Driver’s license.
