Assistant Professor Ports and Waterways

The Ports and Waterways research group, part of the Civil Engineering and Geosciences faculty at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), invites candidates for a tenure track assistant professor position to complement, extend and strengthen the group's competences.

The world's economy relies heavily on waterborne supply chains. Approximately 90% of all global trade is shipped by marine transport; according to UNCTAD/RMT/2019 in tons roughly equally divided in containers, tanker trade, main bulks and other dry cargo. Overall efficiency of global supply chains is to a great extent determined by the in-port and hinterland transport networks they are connected with. A major challenge for the field of ports and waterways engineering is timely adaptation of transport networks, and their associated infrastructure, to ever changing external circumstances, such as increasing vessel sizes, developments in trade, climate change, increased focus on sustainability, the energy transition, autonomous shipping, digitization, etc.  Large investments are required to maintain (and where possible improve) competitive positions. Optimizing while markets continuously rebalance requires insight, skill, fundamental and applied research. Getting it wrong is not only very costly but may severely impact future competitiveness (tipping points).

The Ports and Waterways group actively contributes to the development of worldwide methods and standards: through research and publication of widely recognized articles and books, through clear and engaging education, through active development of software packages for a range of engineering challenges, and through active involvement in organisations such as SmartPort, PIANC, EcoShape, DigiShape and Topsector Water & Maritiem. Furthermore, we work in close interaction with port and water authorities (like Port of Rotterdam and Rijkswaterstaat), international consultants and research institutes like Marin and Deltares.

We are looking for a promising scientist with recognized expertise in any of these areas from fundamental and/or technological perspectives. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on the utilisation of novel paradigms in data science, simulation, visualisation and digital twinning. We seek candidates whose research profile expands our research directions while also synergizing with research groups in the department of Hydraulic Engineering.

Candidates should have a successful scientific track record and be able to formulate an independent research program addressing current scientific and technological challenges. The candidate is expected to participate in the teaching of courses offered in the Civil Engineering Bachelor and Master.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have the following qualifications:
