Principal Engineer - Capital Delivery

About the role:
This is a fantastic opportunity to join the newly established engineering team within Thames Water’s Capital Delivery business area and you will be able to help shape a wide portfolio of challenging projects.
Leading a team of Lead Design Engineers for the design and technical assurance of water and wastewater non-infrastructure projects. The role will be part of the intelligent client Thames Water needs to be able to deliver its ambitious AMP7 programme of works.
Key Accountabilities:
- Plan the design activities for a large portfolio of projects and allocate appropriate resources. Working with the Technical Assurance Manager being able to identify and forecast resources needs is a key requirement.
- Responsible for engineering activities from the outline design stage, through tendering and tender assessment, to technical assurance of contractor’s designs, commissioning and hand-over.
- Act as the point of contact for Project Managers for all technical related matters.
- Act as the key contact for the role of CDM Designer or Principal Designer particularly for urgent projects where the design is undertaken by the in-house engineers.
- Undertake health and safety inspection of construction sites, and work continually with the design team and construction engineers towards zero accidents.
- Be competent in risk management, including risk identification, mitigation and control. The ability to ‘de-risk and add value during the outline design stage, before contract award, is a key requirement for this position.
- Undertake design reviews ensuring robust and safe solutions whilst meeting business and operational requirements.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide the technical input into ‘de-risking Project Briefs to maximise value
- Provide the technical sign-off and assurance during technical delivery including handover
- Ensure we are compliant with engineering-based regulatory requirements in their area
- Support the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for engineering
- Support the establishment of a cohesive, sustainable engineering structure from graduate to industry experts that leads Thames Water’s engineering requirements into AMP8 and beyond
To be successful you will have the following skills and experience:
- A recognised leader in engineering with considerable experience in the field of Water and Wastewater non-infrastructure assets.
- Proven ability to lead large teams to deliver a large portfolio of projects
- Understanding of the regulatory environment to achieve compliance with our engineering regulatory requirements
- Excellent leadership and communication skills both internally and externally
- Ability to collaborate with, and influence, senior colleagues
- Budget management experience
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent with a professional chartership
- Possess a passion for continuous professional development and with an active approach to driving diversity within engineering at Thames Water.
