I am in the need of some inputs about how to remove aluminium from drinking water.
The values of aluminium shift due to the season but sometimes can reach over 300 mg/L. The idea was to test a strong cationic ion exchange resin. But the results were not quiet good enough...the performance of the filtration was below expectations...
So my question is, if the aluminium is in the complex form and not in the ionic form...since the source of the water is a lagoon and can have some amount of organic matter, even that at the moment the water treatment plant keeps all parameters fulfilling the legislation, with the exception of aluminium...Any ideas on what can I do?
It too high contaminate with AL, Do you have the existing treatment plant? and do you have an existing PID diagram for process treatment ? see more at www.phakee.com
Agree with Rami E. Kremesti MSc, CSci, CEnv, CWEM lime softening could lead to aluminum hydroxide formation which results in particle settling. If the water flow is high consider tube settlers to reduce the size of the settling tank.
Do a quick filterability test with some Wattman paper or a small 5 micron filter to see if that polishes out the residual and if it works put it ahead of the cation softener.
Cold or hot lime softening may prove to be a cost effective way to remove the complexed aluminum. You will need to play with the pH. A prior AOP may also put it in ionic form and improve removal results. Hope this helps. Sean
