So far the use of DAF for seawater pretreatment (and more specifically algae removal) have had limited success because the existing DAF technologies available on the market today are tailored (and work well) for treatment of fresh surface water (i.e., lake and river water) and wastewater. Seawater however has a number of differences such as the different size of algae and the differrnet water density, which have made existing DAF applications for membrane pretreatment quite unsuccessful. I am working with a number of DAF suppliers to modify their existing DAF treatment technologies for seawater applications and I do believe that the next generation of DAF systems which will be available on the market in 3 to 5 years will be suited for seawater desalination pretreatment applications. If you would like to learn more about the key issues associated with the use of today's DAF technology for seawater please read the book "DAF for water treatment" fro Dr. James Edzward - http://www.amazon.com/Dissolved-Air-Flotation-Water-Clarification/dp/0071745629
