we are treting effluent from  textile industries which has a high pH. In the treatment plants for this effluent, usually sulfuric acid is used to adjust the pH. I want to know which one is a better option HCL or H2SO4 for the treatment and why?

Is the best because your final effluent is a base pH >7, whereby if pH is lessthan 7 then we supposed to add acid.

Adjust the pH

Hi Ria:

If the purpose of the use of sulfuric adic is just to adjust pH, HCL is usually cheaper and may actually more cost effective for your application.

HCL over H2SO4

There might be some points to be considered switching from H2SO4 to HCl:

1. HCl dosing pumps are expansive than H2SO4 and more corroded. You have to use high density polypropylene pump. Even you can't use rubbery hose.

2. More HCl is required strength wise to perform a neutralization than it is required to do so by Sulfuric Acid. It also increases the chance to exceed the allowable chloride concentration in the end stream  as in textile wastes, it already contains chloride from other sources .

About unfavorable properties of H2SO4 that HCL is free of: HCl is much less costly that H2SO4.
