In order to calculate alkalinity, you need either: a) to know concentration of calcium carbonate, or b) titrate the water (about 50 mL) in question with a dilute sulfuric acid (~0.01 N) to pH 4.5 for total alkalinity, and use the following formula
Alkalinity = [mL acid][Acid][Normality][ 50,000]
