1. Due to the modularity for desalination units there are no size constraints to be expected. Nearly to be considered a standard are actually seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plants with a potable water production of about 100,000 to 200,000 m³/d, very few already even bigger, e. g. up to 500,000 m³/d.

The costs per m³ can reach a range below one Euro in the meantime based on favorable local frame conditions, CAPEX and OPEX included.  

HIgh plant availability and process reliability are fundamental rerquirements if the plants are well designed, manufactured and operated adequately. 

2. As "each case is different", what I address as the "golden rule of chemical engineering", a general statement is not possible. Specification of the raw water and the requested quality of the permeate or potable water are basis for a related assessment, as especially the pre-treatment will influence related technological decisions.
