Hi all, I am seriously looking for a source of non-chlorine based disinfection tablets for application on household and small load drinking water applications.
Please do not respond with any other type of technology, it is not of relevance for this particular application and your response will be ignored.
You got lots of answers Gary, but if it is for household drinking water I assume there would be power available? If so, if you are interested, we have a 15mm pipe fitting within which is a tiny cell producing ozone from the incoming water. It uses a 12V DC supply, and minimal current (circa 1A). It can be sited on the inlet to the house for example. Apologies if this sounds out of scope, but it would certainly do the required disinfection, safely.
Gary. Have you considered other halogens besides chlorine, such as iodine? Here is a link to a very good summary of water disinfection options, that includes information on iodine and iodine resins: https://academic.oup.com/cid/article/34/3/355/388050
i believe someone commented tablets are not sustainable and/or do not work. No disinfectant is perfect. Each has advantages and disadvantages. A multiple barrier approach is advisable. For example, while parasitic cysts are more resistant to halogens than bacteria, and to a lesser extend viruses, filtration can be very effective at cyst reduction in combination with halogen applications. Keep in mind that a chlorinated water system is not free of bacteria, as evidenced by heterotrophic plate count (HPC) levels in public water distribution systems.
we are working in sewage water treatment segment since last 10 years & having our own technology & also representing Eco Friendly technology too..
For your purpose we have best proven Eco friendly , non-toxic , herbal extract product Ecoclean 2300 which clear all the bacterial load including Ecoli also .........
Product Description :
It is a combination of herbal extracts (Neem, Thulasi, Moringa and Cleaning Nut) with proven water-purifying capabilities, bound together using a water soluble organic solvent.
It is totally non-toxic and safe to use.Used at very low dosages of 20 ppm (20 ml for 1000 liters) in drinking water & 40 ppm / kl in sewage water, it causes flocculation and sedimentation of sludge and also kills harmful bacteria including fecal coliforms and E-coli, bringing the water to potable grade after filtration with sand and carbon filters.
The technology is non-power intensive and does not require constantaeration.
it is a technology that enables reclamation of more than 95% of waste water. A Green Technology that is a solution for the looming fresh water crisis confronting the world.
Sir , For your further information , I can provide all sort of test result and case studies where this products is being used.
You may want to check out activated ceramic technology from Frontiers. It could work for small households. Not sure how long the media lasts and whether it requires regeneration?
Gary, MadiDrop in the US manufactures a silver-infused ceramic tablet that disinfects 10l of drinking water overnight. Designed for household applications. Lasts 12 months in field tests. Please see madidrop.com and contact Jim Smith, a UVA professor and inventor of the technology, from the website. Available in Southern Africa.
You could try chlorine dioxide tablets. There are a number of businesses that manufacture them. We have experimented with them but don't like the sediment they leave behind over time. Google up Tristel or Scotmas or Dutrion. Chlorine dioxide will kill virus, E coli, spore formers and crypto and giardia. I manufacture a chlorine dioxide solution 1000ppm and have had it lab tested with a 0.006mg/l of chlorine showing which the laboratory people reckon came from the town water supply. This product has a shelf life of at least 6 months if stored correctly!
Hi Gary, I have experience with two other oxidants in solid form that act much like chlorine. These are magnesium peroxide and potassium permanganate. However, I used powders and have no experience with pellets for drinking water disinfection. Anyhow, I hope this helps, Hans.
The Aquathin AquaShield Series has been used in South Africa for over 10 years destroying e.coli, HPC and cholera (Lesotho region). There is a specific AquaShield Model that also removes cysts.
