I am in PhD coursework in Chemical Engineering.
I am interested to do water-related research work.
Kindly guide me which area of water treatment still can reflect novelty and scope for PhD research work.

Phosphorus removal is going to be a big issue in the US. Current state of the art is expensive, capital intensive, and dfficult to operate.

You may wish to consider membrane desalination or membrane wastewater treatment.

Hi Muhammed, I see a great interest in the use of Human waste. By using vacuum operated toilets (only 1/2 litre of water needed) the human waste is directed into a anaerobic digester to produce methane gas from this organic matter. (take about 20 days at 37 C)
Naturally the more toilets the better. Like a hotel of prison, or student campus, nursing home, or even small villages and refugee camps. Build in 20 foot containers with 6 toilets can accommodate 300 people. see www.envierho.ie

Hi Muhammad, Two colleagues and I have recently published a paper where we outline a few issues, e.g. about substance loop closure in water management, which may be offering topics for a chemist. You may want to have a look at it: The role of constructed wetlands in a new circular economy, resource oriented, and ecosystem services paradigm

1) Sea Water Desalination with Forward Osmosis technology, and incorporating Membrane Distillation to increase Sea Water conversion (to sweet water).
2) Industrial Waste Heat utilization for use in Thermal desalination.
Amongst many others, either of the above 2 fileds looks interesting in terms of scope and novelty.

There is a growing technology of no chemicals at all in any kind of water treatment. All of the healthy natural purification methods are found in nature. The only engineering required is residential units set up and maintenance.

Hello Muhammad,
I believe an area that promises a lot is low TMP (Trans Membrane Pressure) membrane technologies (the use of Graphene or other membrane materials). It may be the way to obtain pure water from a variety of sources.
