Normally, the MBBR media is removed from the tanks via the air-lifting solution.

We have used a super vac and built a large temporary crib with carpentry and tarps and a drainage trough to extract and then clean the media for diffuser maintenance and air line repair on a Large WSB system in Ontario. It was a challenging and expensive job and real consideration needs to be given to this maintenance cost and procedure when designing an MBBR for onsite systems.

We also use a vac truck - make sure you have a place to dump it on the ground or into a container where you can control the drainage - the media can hold a lot of water and slime.
