I was involved with a recovery project to recover two river valleys in Spain. It is a multi discipline effort if the final result is to restore the known initial valley state and what is desirable is to reconstruct it with provisions to prevent deterioration.
At the beginning were two deteriorated valleys black and with dead waters due to coal mining activities, today they are clean, and recover the Salmon fishing quality.

The name of the two rivers were Nalon and Caudal, in the Province of Asturias, Northern Spain. The projects had finance from Europe. If you do not find more info, let me know and I will try to help you.
