Seawater Quality Near Mozambique

Published by in Case Studies

Hello everyone, I am preparing for feasibility study report about desalination plant. Due to busy schedule, we do not sampling to design desalination plant. If has desalination plant  experience near  Mozambique, please share the seawater quality.

Thank you

I support the comments below that advise sampling is essential, that is unless it is a very small plant and you are able/prepared to risk having to make modifications during commissioning.

Sample not just for salinity but for temperature, suspended solids, organic material etc'. The sampling must replicate the proposed intake design - consider if it is beach well, nearshore, offshore and near surface or at depth. Sampling  should ideally be over 12 months but at least 6 months covering both warm and cool seasons. Consider also some trials to validate the proposed pre-treatment.  Good pre-treatment is the key to success and to design that you need good information about about the range of raw water quality.

I would also advocate for baseline environmental monitoring at the proposed brine discharge location and brine discharge plume modelling to ensure the risk of short-circuiting  is minimal.

Lots of things to consider!

Look up the Argo project, ...

Look up the Argo project, which has  many operation CTD  floats operating off the coast of Mozambique,  you can plot these on google earth and get many months of data in public domain , the argo probes  give very accurate salinity measurement  in PSU and surface temperature.  This is the most important first data.  if you have no data on turbidity and suspended solids, then assume its bad and  use a lamella clarifier as first step for pretreatment  with a bypass (if turbidity is in reality low).  IF algae bloom not a likely issue (i would not expect it there) then dont use DAF .  I suggest deep bed gravity DMF with  1.5m of pumice or filtralite over  0.7m sand as pretreatment, this will prevent  major biofouling of the RO (pumice and filtralite are excellent  biological filters). Do not cover DMF , do not chlorinate DMF filters,  Do not use UF/MF (nigthmares for RO biofouling)  . Use pigging (eg Pigteck) for intake lines (use 2)  instead of  shock chlorination  (far cheaper and far more effective, and no  biofouling impact from  dechlorinated organics on RO ).   That is fast guide .

Mr. Hyeok,

If you send me the longitude, I can look up archival oceanographic data.

The technology selection ...

The technology selection depends on the nature of usage and consumption demand such as liter per capita per day or gallon per hour or per day. Then you can get a pre designed desalination plant that can be transported easily. I would suggest you to visit website of  So~Safe Water Technologies the most reliable manufacturing company in all over the world. They can guide you very well and they may provide technical solution as well as they can provide services if you required.

Being expert of water quality, I am dealing So~Safe product in Pakistan since last ten years and I am satisfied with the product efficiency.

The suppliers that would be interested in this job should be more than happy to test some samples that you could collect according to their instructions.  These are basic tests that most people could run.
