Floating reed beds can provide a good and cost effective solution as they will cover some of the surface area and prevent direct sunlight; however need to make sure that there is still sufficient free (non-covered) area for the atmospheric oxygen to access water in the pond. You can also harvest these reeds (need to select species that are usable). Similar project have been done in SE Asia and Northern and Western Australia with good results.
