You need to look at ...

You need to look at volumetric expansion. If the material has part or full change of state then consider the mass assessment also with volume..its the impact at that moment of time in fraction of a second etc..

What is generating the water hammer?  How frequently?  Have you monitored the pressure transient magnitude?
