Not for purification, but if there is an issue with removing any sedimentation prior to purifying the water, I use a food grade filtering cloth for my rainwater harvesting projects.  The filters are commonly used in the dairy industry to remove heavy particulates from milk. The filters can be washed, disinfected, and reused many times.
