A few years ago I discovered a unique standalone UF based filter unit which uses no electricity has a simple and effective manual backwash and can be installed as single units or in series for higher water output. I had installed these in areas of rural Maharashtra as a CSR project and found them to be very effective. Each unit treated to potable standards 500-700 L/Hour depending on input water quality. It required about 3-12 feet of head pressure and the water could be raised to that height and put in a overhead water tank with a simple solar panel. It is perfect for the rural context as well as disasters like the situation in Nepal.
