Water pollutants can be classified in several categories, some major water pollutants are

1. Disease-causing bacteria, protozoa, viruses and parasitic worms.

2. Oxygen-demanding wastes.

3. Water-soluble inorganic pollutants, like acids, salts and toxic metals.

4. Water-soluble nitrates and phosphates.

5. Organic compounds such as oil, plastics and pesticides.

6. water-soluble radioactive compounds.

7. Even suspended sediment is a major water pollutant.
