hierry Gregorius argues the state of GIS, data and IT are a big frustration. And, in the geoscience community the challenges users face with GIS are only getting worse.
Olufemi Aluko: Free open source GIS like QGIS with GRASS are very competent systems and in many respects have more functionality than propriety systems.
But they do usually have a greater learning curve and require a higher level of IT skills (databases, SQL, programming).
GIS/Spatial systems should be usable for all professionals from geoscientistss, to accountants to medial staff i.e. GIS is becoming mainstream.
There are a lot of job positions, accountant, marketing, bus. manager with GIS skills required. The marketing guys should be doing GIS analysis for their field, the same for hydrologist etc.
I think the focus has changed from the GIS professional from being an analyst to a GIS-database support person.
GIS support staff need strong database, IT and programming skills.
