For E-coli and coliform monitoring, consideration could be placed on use of Tryptophan-like Fluorescence (TLF) monitoring, which would provide a non-specific signal on bacteria levels within the water. An E. Colli analyzer shall not be confused with a real-time "sensor", ...to get reliable and accurate results it's suitable to carry out a minimum bacterial incubation, this avoids false alarms or the opposite, to ignore it.
I recommend the EASYCHEM COLI online, ... it's based on the Colilert®-18 , which is an ISO 9308-2:2012 and approved by EPA and APPHA (Standard Methods for Examination of Water and Wastewater).

Check out FREDSense in Calgary. Their technology could be applied as a side-stream online sensor. They had developed a coliform measurement sensor about 6 years ago. It’s a biological sensor that produces an electrical signal in proportion to the substance being measured. Not quite real time, as it takes about 45 minutes per analysis, but that beats 24 hours.
