Check out FREDSense in Calgary.  Their technology could be applied as a side-stream online sensor.  They had developed a coliform measurement sensor about 6 years ago.  It’s a biological sensor that produces an electrical signal in proportion to the substance being measured.  Not quite real time, as it takes about 45 minutes per analysis, but that beats 24 hours.
