Oil Water Remediation

Published by

We have a serious case of groundwater contamination at Nisisioken Ogale, in Eleme LGA.

The pollution is due to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company product pipeline in proximity of which an 8 cm layer of refined oil was observed floating on the groundwater which serves the community wells.

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) are 30,000 for the adjacent soil.

How can we most efficiently and economically remove the oil from the already contaminated groundwater?

Dear Mary, your water seems ...

Dear Mary,

your water seems to be similar to the produced water (extracted from oil Wells along with the oil). For this water the treatment process is rather standard and based on steps in sequence:

- CPI (Corrugated Plates Interceptor) to reduce the oil content down to less than 50 ppm

- NSF (NutShell Filters) to reduce the residual oil content down to less than 5 ppm

If you need zero oil content, the final AC (Activated Carbons) will ensure the requested performance.

In some cases an IAF (Induced Air Flotation) is installed between CPI and NSF.

Should you need more details, please contact me privately (I am a process consultant, not a seller of plants)

Dear Mary, Good question, ...

Dear Mary,

Good question, the oil is the dangerous pollutant for aquatic life, it shield the oxygen transfer into depth of water.

Step by step process for oil water separation when oil quantity s more then gravity system to be used and hen centrifuge oil disc separation etc. following are the process, Centrifugal separation is another process of separating two fluids with contrast in densities. Imparting centrifugal motion creates two streams namely the less dense oil which orients itself along the rotational axis and the denser fluid (water) which orients around the stream of less dense fluid.

  1. Gravity separation
  2. Oil disc separation
  3. Centrifuge separation by density
  4. Skimmer system
  5.  Microbubble technology.
  6. partition gravimetric method
  7.  Dean-Stark Method to separate oil and water.
  8. Membrane-based filtration systems.

To separate oil from water, add a solution of soluble ionic salt to the solution. Distillation, which involves boiling and condensing the water, is another option, as well as partially freezing the oil and water combination and discarding one-fourth to one-third of the unfrozen water.

Prem Baboo

First; it would seem your ...

First; it would seem your community needs to have EPA intervention against the oil company for violations of Title 40 for oil/gas pollution regulations. Based on your offered information; the remediation and cleanup will be extensive and expensive. Without much more specific analyses and data; the primary environmental negative impact gives all indications that your situation will require mass soil removal and replacement; a full and comprehensive aquifer pump out; water treatment (tertiary); and return for the whole aquifer. There must be a comprehensive risk assessment conducted for the entire area which the aquifer supplies water to.  In most extreme cases; the aquifer is abandoned and the next deeper aquifer is tapped into for supply to the effected area. This is only a superficial response to your critical matter; again; your federal; state; and local agencies should facilitate legal action for any remediation and restoration actions against the pollution generating industry. The industry should foot the bill for this debacle; not; the people. Please feel free to contact me at : irsd7@verizon.net

Many good answers below, but ...

Many good answers below, but you first need to start cleanup with bulk removal using highly efficient oil/water separator, then treat the residual water for the balance of trace hydrocarbons, usually with activated carbon (which can be regenerated) and post filtration for secondary removal stages.  Soils can be remediation using standard soil vapor extraction systems and then flushing the soil with hydrocarbon degrading bacteria using the vadose zone as an incubator for growing the bacteria. This is a simple explanation but there are other steps required as well, UV disinfection of treated water, et. al.

I test a special filter ...

I test a special filter material for the removing of oil from contaminated water at time. The adsorptions capacity of this filter material is much higher than charcoal (between 10 and 15 times more). For more information please feel free to contact me directly.

We now have Aquifer studies.  The 60 m Aquifer is also contaminated although the 200m and the 300m aquifers are not penetrated.

Yes, using a charcoal ...

Yes, using a charcoal adsorption filter. The process in series is the most indicated. The efficiency of the adsorptive filter is measured by the concentration of TPH at the filter outlet.

Ho Mary

Soil remediation will almost certainly be required. If you like, I can offer details of the TELESIS Soil remediation system which is based on the strategy of locating a series of sub surface horizontal drains via HDD

Bonjour  ceci est un grave ...

Bonjour

Hello this is a serious problem that cannot be solved as easily we could believe it with a silver bullet.

Drinking water takes years to become what it is: drinking. When soiled by pollution it automatically loses this feature. There is the visible floating and dissolved invisible pollution.Already a first time to find the source of this pollution and stop it as quickly. No one is able to determine that it will contaminate other underground reserves.

Then for years I protest against the fact that the world takes natural hydraulic environments for a trash can. The problem of drinking water is intimately linked to the problem of wastewater his main source of pollution. Since when this contamination date? What will be its impact on the health of the people supplied with this water? This will be the evil of the century and for centuries to come.

Hi Mary, The problem seems ...

Hi Mary,

The problem seems rather complicated. First, as I understand there is both (underground) water and soil contamination with hydrocarbons. This means that water treatment is not enough if soil remediation is not also included.
For contaminated groundwater, the treatment process depends on the concentration levels of hydrocarbons. A typical scheme we usually apply, includes upstream oil recovery and treatment of the remaining water with residual hydrocarbons via a constructed wetland (a green and cost-effective technology with minimum energy consumption). But we need more info to suggest the optimal treatment train.

Hi Mary

I agree with Russell Donnelly and Jean Marius, first fix the problem by getting the local environmental authorities involved, because no matter what you do now to clean up the aquifer, that rotten pipe from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company will continue spilling oil into the ground.

After you fix the source of the problem only then you can start to do the cleanup, there are many technologies that you can be used to separate oil from water, you have to be very careful on which technology you will use, it depends on a number of things such as: is the oil emulsified?, depth of the well, ppm of oil in the water and the most important one, capex and opex, one thing for sure, as Russell and Jean Marius said, it will not be easy or cheap.
