You may also be interested in biofilm prevention in these type pipe systems using ultrasonic pulsing.  The vibration from the ultrasound causes anaerobic bacteria from colonizing on the pipe walls.  The colonies attract bivalves and other crustaceans to grow on the walls because they secrete polysaccharides that are food for them.  Ultrasound pulses cause the anaerobes to sense that they are in turbulent water, a place they cannot colonize.  Examples attached.  george@algaecontrol.us

Ultrasonic systems can be ...

Ultrasonic systems can be installed in pipelines to prevent the formation of biofilm that serves to control the adherence of barnacles and mussels.  In Norway, Quattro-DB® ultrasonic devices caused the prevention and to a large degree the detachment of pre-existing blue mussels in a pumping wet well system for seawater cooling water flow. Boaz, Following from ...

Boaz,

Following from previous message, have a look at manufacturer's guidelines, practice manuals and standard drawings for sewers ... A good pipe supplier should also be able to advise you on how best to clean the pipeline.  E.g. See section 4.7 ...

Hello Boaz, At the Gold ...

Hello Boaz,

At the Gold Coast Desalination Plant (125MLD in Australia) the ~2km intake tunnel is not pigged. They do periodic shock dosing of chlorine @ ~4mg/L for 1 or 2 hours/day. A tethered RoV has also been used for video inspection.

Best opportunity to remove barnacles, mussels, etc is during annual maintenance shutdown. Dose with chlorine until the flow has filled the pipeline. Then shutdown with the pipe full @4mg/L and allow to soak for at least 3 days. Vac, flush or jet rod the pipeline then to remove the dead material. Water quality will be very bad (black) when you restart, You will need to divert that and maybe treat before discharge back to sea depending on local environmental regulations.

Feel free to DM me if you would like to discuss in more detail.

Hi Boaz. If the pipeline is ...

Hi Boaz. If the pipeline is constructed in PE then this is a flexible plastic pipeline. This type of material is not usually pigged or scraped as it will be irreversibly damaged. Also if the sections have been butt fused (as is usual) there will be internal ridges at the bead locations that will make physical cleaning virtually impossible. If the pipeline really does need cleaning then chemical or biological processes are recommended to consideration.

Sorry for the lack of info, ...

Sorry for the lack of info, the pigging system is required for a sea water pipeline that connects an intake PS to a RO plant, total length will be around 3.7KM. The pipeline will be connected to a reservoir at the RO plant.

what would be the minimum head and flow velocity in the pipeline needed for launching the pig from the RO plant?

Any other info. will be apretiated.

Make sure you can draw water ...

Make sure you can draw water from the sea to pig, or some adequately sized reservoir.  Preferably a two-pipe system if cost is not prohibitive - depending on length. You are welcome to contact me on Linkedin.

We provide design for ...

We provide design for subsurface seawater pipes. See IntakeWorks.com  One of the criteria would be length, what is the purpose of the draw solution, whether any anti-fouling measure are under consideration.  There are some techniques to limit biofouling with use of ultrasonic devices which we have been pioneering.  Would love to find out more info.  intakeworks@gmail.com

We have technology that reduces viscosity and surface tension of water.  This will significantly reduce the need for pigging of the pipes
