We are looking for an energy-efficient and natural drinking water treatment system for several schools with about 1000 pupils and 100 teachers. The available water is groundwater with various loads like Iron. The capacity should be about 4,000 liters per day. Reverse osmosis, nano or membrane filters are not desired. Sustainability and easy maintenance are a must. Which natural water treatment system is the best to use? Who has experience with such conditions and systems and knows appropriate providers?

Have your groundwater analyzed before anything else is done and then design and build your water treatment plant from there. A central treatment unit will be more economical than having a unit in each point of use. You only need to dispense the drinking water at point of use using a cooler or heater depending on what the students need.

Matthias. A properly developed and sealed well, that is not under the direct influence of surface water, should not require filtration or disinfection, but a professional engineer can advise you further on this. Obtaining a representative water sample and a potable water analysis from and accredited laboratory is your next step. Note that samples for dissolved metals must be filtered and acidified when the sample is collected. The lab will provide you with a syringe and filter if requested, along with prepared sample bottles for each test parameter. As you are aware the water his a high iron concentration, you may have already had a water sample analyzed; however, even to determine the most sustainable method of treating iron (if necessary) you need to know the total iron and dissolved iron, and that requires proper sampling. As noted in other comments, iron is not typically a health issue but can cause staining if too high, and can also result in your well becoming clogged with iron bacteria. This is not a water quality problem, and can be managed through well maintenance and periodic treatment with chlorine bleach. Until you obtain a proper water sample analysis, you will not obtain useful advice on treatment, and will just become confused. The best passive water treatment advice I can give is to hire a local professional engineer with water treatment expertise. Once he/she has determined what needs treating, then seek the experience and knowledge of others to identify novel and tested treatment alternatives.

Hello, i think that a simple combination between aeration and filtration on sand will be needed for this groundwater which contains iron. First,a simple aeration will oxydize the iron which will be transformed into precipitate. second,a filtration on sand will eliminate this precipitate by choosing the appropriate sand granulometry which allow a retention on its surface.

If your groung water is potable, you can just treats the iron contamination by oxygenation and after settling, you can filter it and it will be ok. For more information, text me at valeryyankep@gmail.com

As Ratilal and Guy suggested rainwater harvesting is a great source of water. If collected and stored properly potable in the tank. There additional filtration can be added.

A company on the West Rand has been installing this type of system in the mining industry for a number of years, where available water is used and purified to potable quality, and it is provided on tap at 4C to miners working under very hot conditions. Aerate your water to oxidize the iron or manganese and then let the sediment settle at the bottom of the tank after which you should filter the water using a sand bed.

This should be followed by passing the water through the Solar Wave Water Purifier .

However, this low cost, solar-powered solution has been working flawlessly in Flint, MI, and Kenya for two years, with 3rd party tests confirming water quality available. Production capability for over 5,000 liters per day. Glad to make an intro to the founder.
