My colleagues and I have developed a system for developing countries in Asia and Australia.
It involves a solar driven 12V DC pump, mechanical disinfection, activated media filtration to remove various loads in groundwater such as Iron, Manganese, and Arsenic.
The filter media and mechanical disinfection device will last the lifetime of the filtration system with no maintenance required or need for a replacement of these components. The filter media is manufactured using recycled glass as a raw material, it can then be recycled at the end of the filtration system's life.

Have your groundwater analyzed before anything else is done and then design and build your water treatment plant from there. A central treatment unit will be more economical than having a unit in each point of use. You only need to dispense the drinking water at point of use using a cooler or heater depending on what the students need.
If your groung water is potable, you can just treats the iron contamination by oxygenation and after settling, you can filter it and it will be ok. For more information, text me at valeryyankep@gmail.com
Aquaminerals, has developed a new approach to water treatment with the University of Oulu. The company offers state-of-the-art solutions that are highly profitable for the purification of drinking water. • Produces and delivers adsorbent and portable metering technologies tailored to customer needs, which require very reasonable capital costs and operating expenses. Aquaminerals products can remove, for example, soluble arsenic, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium.
The equipment with the corresponding dosing technology is mobile and installed in marine containers. The standard treatment capacity is 10-20 m3 / h, and special equipment designed to the customer's needs can be manufactured from 3 to 300 m3 / h depending on the water to be treated.
I agree that you will need to collect samples and have them analyzed to determine the most cost effective treatment. I wish it were simpler but every water source is unique. Depending on the amount of iron, a simple oxidation and settling of iron solids could provide safe water. But what of other less obvious potential contaminants? That is a question only answered through some lab analysis. Also before purchasing any equipment you will want to pilot test a treatment approach.
You may want to start with clean rain water first. Very large storage tank. Pump for pressure your control. Most rain water is non pathogenic and free of toxins. But id you wish added safety using an Archaea bio filter. This will allow you to eliminate the cost of infrastructure. Most storage systems have a 2 years supply. This way you can water truck emergency water to a nearby school or district. Depending on the size of the pump motor monthly electrical usage would be similar to that of a fish aquarium.
Matthias. A properly developed and sealed well, that is not under the direct influence of surface water, should not require filtration or disinfection, but a professional engineer can advise you further on this. Obtaining a representative water sample and a potable water analysis from and accredited laboratory is your next step. Note that samples for dissolved metals must be filtered and acidified when the sample is collected. The lab will provide you with a syringe and filter if requested, along with prepared sample bottles for each test parameter. As you are aware the water his a high iron concentration, you may have already had a water sample analyzed; however, even to determine the most sustainable method of treating iron (if necessary) you need to know the total iron and dissolved iron, and that requires proper sampling. As noted in other comments, iron is not typically a health issue but can cause staining if too high, and can also result in your well becoming clogged with iron bacteria. This is not a water quality problem, and can be managed through well maintenance and periodic treatment with chlorine bleach. Until you obtain a proper water sample analysis, you will not obtain useful advice on treatment, and will just become confused. The best passive water treatment advice I can give is to hire a local professional engineer with water treatment expertise. Once he/she has determined what needs treating, then seek the experience and knowledge of others to identify novel and tested treatment alternatives.

Best regards. You could evaluate these alternatives in Lee H Odell 2017, articule "Groundwater treatment options abound". The coagulation and filtration treatment in my opinion is the most recommended. A water characterization should be done to determine the treatment.
Within a matter of months, water filter material of granulated ceramics will be available. A small amount of silver metal is bonded to the granules. The systems will depend only on gravity, flowing through the material, involving no chemicals or electricity. The filter material will be available within a range of percentage effectiveness at reduction of pathogens, anywhere within the range of log 3 to log 6.
Since the water supply is intended for drinking, it's concerning that you say the groundwater source has "various loads like iron". Iron can impart an unpleasant taste, but is not a particular health threat. However, groundwater sources can be contaminated with other substances (e.g. bacteria and viruses) that may be a health threat, as well as other organic and inorganic compounds that could be a serious health threat in sufficient concentrations. If you have not already done so, you should have the water analysed by a competent laboratory so that these threats can be assessed. Once this information is available, it will be much easier to recommend a treatment strategy.
Dear Mr. Before starting to take the views of specialists in this field. It is best to easily determine what is suitable for you. Include laboratory test data for water quality. Especially chemical testing of water because the source of water is the well. After that, everyone is sure to give you the right advice and choice
It is only Rainwater Harvesting for purely Natural clean Water. It is under implemented successfully at Nilpar School in Rapar, Kutch in Gujarat, India
Hi, I have installed a manual backwash UF filter with no electricity requirement capable of 500-700L/Hour treatment in rural areas of India. Unit works on Head Pressure. If something like this is what you are interested in, please email me at sanjay_a_deshpande@yahoo.com. Let me also know where in the world you need this.
Thank you for providing your contact details with Mr. Mend. However, if you would share additional details about solutions (products and services) for the issue, others who have similar problem could see it and benefit from it.
